Suggested Modifications

Right now, I'm working hard on a Retro Edition Patch for V2 of Kazaa Lite. I've had a few suggestions and here is detailed info on the progress of implementing those suggestions. Special thanks to 'd' for his/her huge list of suggestions :o)

Stuff I've done

  • New splash screen
Well, I've kinda done it. The splash in Kazaa Lite is based on the new splash that they've put in Kazaa Media Desktop. My intention with the Retro patch has always been to try and restore some of the cosmetic appeal of KMD that gets lost in KLite. I have altered the splash screen slightly, to make it a little nicer to look at (and to Retro-brand it) but beyond that it will be very similar. I felt changing it completely wouldn't be in the spirit of the Retro Patch idea. I may consider making a different patch (as I have promised in the past, but failed to deliver) that will make different alterations to the cosmetics and perhaps provide a different splash screen.

  • Web search
It uses Google, rather than Kazaa's own search system. It's exactly the same as going to the Google web site. I might change this back to the actual Kazaa search system, if people want it, but that may result in things like popups.

  • Get rid of the &noad=0 thing
Yes, done. It naffed me off too. It's not actually completely removed, but rather hidden.

Stuff I will do/will try to do

  • Change the Theatre logo
Oh yes, this will most certainly be changed. I haven't done it yet, but I've got the altered logo I used in my V1.7.2 patch ready and waiting :o)

  • New start page
I have changed the start page. It currently points to www.kazaalite.tk, as that way the patch doesn't favour any particular site (kazaalite.tk has links to them all!). Allowing people to pick their start page is made difficult by that code-altering problem again: I can't change the internal workings. I might consider setting up a start page on my site and getting Kazaa to point to that. In fact, if I do that, and Kazaa sends cookies like it should, I might be able to set up a way of letting people pick their start page. Although I don't want it to hammer my server too much. Hmmm <gets a-thinkin'>

  • Remove menu blank spots
Haven't done it yet, but will be trying. V2 doesn't have nearly as many blank spots as V1.7.2 had, but I will aim to get rid of them. It can actually be quite hard to do without corrupting the whole program, so it took me hours of fiddling in V1.7.2 to accomplish what should be a relatively simple task. Hopefully in V2 it will be easier.

  • Remove shop & comment buttons in official skins
As I have said, I only looked very briefly at the skinning system. I don't yet know how easy it will be to hack an existing skin, but I assume it won't be too hard, in which case, I will certainly do this. I might not include it with the Retro Patch for size reasons, but put it up as a separate download.

  • New skins
I'm not a very experienced skin maker. My attempts at skinning Winamp have always been a bit iffy, but that hasn't stopped me trying. If I get the time, I will be making Kazaa Lite skins.

  • Integrate the Speed Up tool
Great idea. Not sure if I can do it though. I will investigate. I can add new menu options, but the actual process of starting another program might require changing the internal code, which (altogether now!) I can't do :o)

  • A skin that looks like <insert anything here>
Yes, as I've said, I'll try to do some skins. A suggestion I did like was one that looks like good ol' Napster. Could be fun.

Stuff I can't do (sorry)

  • Remove the space where the ads would go
The ad space is difficult to remove in the non-skinned version, as it would require alteration of the code that drives Kazaa. As I don't have the source code and decompiled code is very difficult to do anything particularly useful with, my patch is (for the time being) only able to alter things outside of the compiled code. As for skins, removing the ad space should be do-able in skins I make myself, although I haven't investigated it fully.

  • More search results
A no-no I'm afraid, for the time being at least. The 200 limit is, to my knowledge, part of the way the FastTrack network works. However, this latest version of Kazaa makes mention of a new Kazaa Plus service (which I assume will cost money) that, amongst other things, allows up to 3000 search results. If it become possible to access this Plus service in some way, it's quite possible either a new version of Kazaa Lite, or a new version of my patch, will make it available.

Blatant Back Covering

I'm not a hacker. I'm not a sad virus maker. My patch does what it says it does, nothing else. It won't open your hard drive up to the entire world. I make these changes to KaZaA Lite because I prefer it this way. I make the changes available to you because I think you'll like them.

Having said that, I have to point out that the KaZaA Lite Retro Edition Patch is provided as is, without warranty, implied or otherwise. Basically, in the highly unlikely event that Retro Edition makes your CPU explode or sleeps with your Mother or something along those "bad" lines, please don't hold me responsible. Tell me, by all means, so I can appologise and remove the patch from the site, but don't sue me. Thanking you.
