Bug Tracking

Well, Indigo Onion is only a Beta site! I really need to be informed of all bugs, even simple spelling or typing errors, so that I can fix them as quickly as possible, and provide you with a better surfing experience.

To avoid wasting your time writing a report about a bug that's already been reported, please have a quick look through the list of known bugs below. The bugs are grouped a bit, to help you follow them. If you find that your bug has not been reported, or even if you are experiencing a slight variation of one that's already listed, please report it!

By the way, I've classified some of these as PseudoBugs. They are not actually bugs in Indigo Onion but either a quirk of a particular browser, or something I've put in by design. I include them in this list to prevent people from reporting issues I can do nothing about.

General Bugs

These are issues relating to the general operation of Indigo Onion (such as incorrect information and persistent error messages).

Cannot 'rollup' panels (PB?)

Detail: When using Opera (6.04 although other versions may be affected), clicking on the 'Rollup panel' links at the top of certain panels does not make the panel roll up.

Cause: This appears to be an issue with the way Opera either sets or reports cookies. As far as I can tell, it is actually setting the cookie, but it is setting it in the wrong place. This means it is not reported to Indigo Onion when you look at a page so the panel is left open.

Status: I'm inclined to beleive this is a bug in Opera. However, there is a chance that Indigo Onion is sending 'not-perfect' cookies, and while IE and Mozilla can handle them, Opera cannot. I will investigate and find a workaround. Potentially a PseudoBug.

Cosmetic Bugs

These are issues relating to the look, formatting and layout of Indigo Onion (including typos and spelling mistakes).

Heading text sits too low (PB)

Detail: When using Opera (6.04 although other versions may be affected) the white text in the purpley headings seems to be too low which looks somewhat odd.

Cause: This appears to be a quirk in the way Opera renders webpages. I say 'quirk' because, technically, it's up to the browser how it interprets the exact position of certain things, so this may not be a bug.

Status: I will not be looking for a workaround for this. It looks odd, yes, but is purely the fault of Opera's quirks as heading are displayed just fine in IE and Mozilla. Hopefully they will fix it. This is a PseudoBug.

Uneven padding in the footer box (PB)

Detail: When using MS Internet Explorer (6.0 although other versions may be affected), on pages where the main content on the left-hand side extends further down the page than the content on the right-hand side, there appears to be a larger white gap at the top of the footer than at the bottom. This does not occur on other pages.

Cause: As far as I can tell, this is a bug in Internet Explorer's rendering engine. The problem does not occur in Mozilla 1.0 or Opera 6.04 (if anyone can confirm that this is indeed a known bug in IE, please let me know)

Status: I may look into fixing this with a workaround for IE, especially as IE is so popular but, ideally, the bug needs to be fixed by Microsoft. I'm therefore classing this as a PseudoBug.

Navigation Bugs

These are issues relating to getting around Indigo Onion (including broken links).
There is 1 known bug in this category.

Missing Menu Links

Detail: Some of the menu options at the top of the screen are not actually links - they are greyed-out text.

Cause: The site is in beta stages and I'm being very slow at getting things working. Some menu options point to pages that are not yet complete and are therefore disabled and appear greyed-out. Also, some sections may have to go offline from time-to-time and this will result in their option being disabled.

Status: This will probably remain the case until the site leaves the beta stages. I'm gradually gettings bits sorted so please bare with me.

Guidelines for reporting Bugs

If you think you've found a bug, and it hasn't already been reported, please send details of the bug to bugreporting@indigo-onion.co.uk

Please provide as much information as you can in your email.

  • Where were you in the site?
A page reference would be good - if you go back to the page where the error occurred and right-click, then select properties, you can copy and paste the information next to "Address (URL)" into your email.
  • What went wrong?
Were you expecting something to happen that didn't? Was a page missing?
  • Any other pertinent information
Such as your ISP name, which might be useful in solving some technical issues.

The more specific you are, the easier it will be to fix the problem.

Keeping Up-to-date

Although I operate the "notifyme" mailing list, to inform people when updates are made to the site, this does not include updates while the site is in this beta stage, as there are already non-beta testers signed up to it who want to be informed when the site goes online for real.

For this reason, there is another mailing list called "betanotify" that will keep you updated with changes to the beta site.

You can subscribe to this list by sending a blank email to betanotify-subscribe@indigo-onion.co.uk
